Southeast Iowa is seeing a growth in unincorporated areas. A large portion of people in Southeast Iowa prefer to live outside of the city limits.
Southeast Iowa has seen 9% growth in unincorporated areas, compared to 3% for the state of Iowa. Not all other rural counties are experiencing this trend of increased household growth in unincorporated areas.
Cost of owning vs renting housing stock
There is no doubt Southeast Iowa is an affordable place for young professionals. Southeast Iowa has a low cost of living that can attract a highly skilled and energetic population to the region.
New housing development
All four counties have seen a positive growth in the number of single-family units.
In Henry County, a $1 million Iowa Workforce Housing Loan enabled the project to move forward with two 12 unit buildings for a total of 24 units in Mt. Pleasant.
West Point and Fort Madison in Lee County have also seen development in single-family and condo living.
